Make Your Own Bone Broth Recipe
My brother came into town on Saturday and together we decided we wanted to make our own bone broth. His girlfriend is coming into town too and we wanted to surprise her by making this nutrient-rich sip-and-go drink! We bought our own grass-fed bones from Earth Fare and also purchased the necessary ingredients to make it! 8 hours later, we had an amazing pot of bone broth!
What is bone broth?
Bone broth is a liquid containing brewed bones and connective tissues. You can use fish, chicken, or cow bones (in this case, we used bovine). Placing the bones in water with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar helps bring out the nutrients from its bone marrow. It’s a delicious and nutritious drink!
Ingredients
2 pounds of organic bones (beef, bison, lamb, chicken, or fish) from your local health foods store
1 gallon of filtered, cool water
2 tbs. of apple cider vinegar (organic, with the mother)
1 chopped onion
3 chopped carrots
5 chopped celery stalks
1 tbs. of Himalayan pink sea salt
Chopped bushel of parsley (optional)
1 clove of garlic (optional)
2 tsp. of turmeric (optional)
2 tsp. of black pepper (optional)
1 tsp. of cumin (optional)
Instructions
When using beef bones, oven roast them first for 30 minutes at 410 degrees (it helps bring out flavor!)
Place bones in large pot
Mix 2 tbs. of apple cider vinegar in gallon of water and pour over bones
Let it sit for 30 minutes
Add chopped onion, carrot, and celery into pot
Add himalayan salt and any additional herbs and spices
Bring pot to a boil and then reduce to simmer
While it is simmering, foamy or froth-like material may bubble up to the surface. These are just impurities from the bones and can be removed by a gentle scooping of a spoon! The better bones you buy (pasture-raised and grass fed ideally) the less of this you will see!
Simmer for 8-12 hours… The longer the better!
What are the benefits?
Bone broth is loaded with gelatin, which is basically a broken-down version of collagen, that is in the connective tissues and bones that you use for your broth. Collagen is needed for the lining of our gut, connective tissues, and joints. Over 25% of our body is collagen and we stop making it ourselves around the age of 21-25. An abundant supply of collagen in your everyday diet can help with sleep, better digestion, skin suppleness, and achy joints! I know I’ve seen a difference and am a huge advocate!
